For the initial VNC connection, generally no.  For samba, definitely yes.

No, because the VNC password specification is separate.  In any event, if that 
were the problem you would see a security error in the logs.

There could be an issue later during the connection process, but I don't think 
you are getting that far.  (But the sniffer traces will tell me exactly; why 
don't you save them off and attach them to an email to me, off list?  Off 
list because the files will be large and we don't want to force people to 
download large files that they don't need.)
