1: better stick to the list, not mailing me direct.
2: No I don't have any clue why it has no effect (but I have some ideas)
2.1: it has only effect for new vncserver sessions.
2.2: it has only effect for the user who's ~/.vnc/xstartup is altered (~
indicates the users homedirectory)
2.3: Be carefull with background and non background in the ~/.vnc/xstartup
script! As I recal by head: all commands in there must be started in the
background.
3: try debugging the vncserver script. It's perl which is somehow readable.
4: try mimiking the actions of the vncserver script in an other (hardcoded)
script
5: search the list archive for changing to KDE or Gnome. Those are just
other window managers (those are window management systems but that does not
mather in this respect).

Thanks,

Good info. However, as a first step, I'd like to use vanilla vnc. btw, I
did mean .vnc/xstartup.
Do you have any insight into why changing the .vnc/xstartup entry from twm
to fvwm has no effect?

Les

For the vncviewer script, you need to edit '~/.vnc/xstartup'. (NOT
'~/.xstartup') In there, exchange 'twm' with the command to start your
favorite window manager. It's just a script that starts some commands. Edit
it to your wishes.

If you want 'the same as on the console', have a look at the setup at
http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp
<http://www.sourcecodecorner.com/articles/vnc/linux.asp> . It gives a vnc
session to which you do a unix login.

For 'exactly the console' see http://xf4vnc.sourceforge.net/
<http://xf4vnc.sourceforge.net/> .

Both setups don't use the ~/.vnc/xstartup file but they use the xdmcp
protocol to get the systems default window manager.

These are points are some alternates....
