Just FYI, I have had somewhat unexpectedly good results using VNC with the client computer on an 802.11b (WiFi) wireless broadband internet connection. This is the system available in the US at many Starbucks locations and airports.
I have two computers at work that are on a company LAN with internet access, and have been able to run them just as if I were there, and reasonably quickly. There's some lag time, but the LAN at work is a theoretical 100mb, and with few users after hours runs pretty fast. Oddly enough, the wireless itself is rated at 11mbps, connected to a T1. Runs much faster most of the time. I attribute this to the high workload on the LAN at work, whereas I am usually the only one on the wireless connection. Still, I is surprising to me. I have also been able to set up a Virtual Private Network connection to these computers as well. It has been very helpful to have the drive access to transfer files as I am a Photographer in a group that is converting from traditional to an all digital operation. The combo of VNC and VPN is going to be very helpful for us I believe. (If our IT people let it continue - there may be some cause for concerns which we will address when they learn of the experiment) There is one thing I have been unable to do, which I apologize is somewhat off topic I guess. Netmeeting does not work over the wireless connection. I am told that it has to do possibly with the protocol used on the wireless end, being NAT. Apparently this system does not allow for the Netmeeting protocol - the way it handles video and audio. There are work arounds, and I have passed this on to the wireless operator. But, if anyone might have information on how to use Netmeeting over a VPN, this would be much appreciated. I do see the video over VNC of course, as it comes over as images, but there is no audio, and it's not really the same as having an actual Netmeeting connection.
