I am the network administrator of class room network
with a 27 Win98SE machines all networked to a
10/100mpbs Ethernet network. Each machine is
configured to log onto a win2000 server machine for
authentication and dhcp settings. Each machine also
has its computer name under the identification tab of
the network control panel applet set to a different
name i.e CIS1,CIS2,CIS3 .... CIS24,CIS25 e.t.c and to
start the WINVNC server in the system tray as soon as
the person logs on. I use VNC on each machine in
order to monitor what the students are doing in the
class room and to help them out of situations where
they not know what to do and to make it easier for me
to do defrags, remove temp files e.t.c from my desktop
workstation. Each machine's "display number in WINVNC
is set to the digit in the computer name ex: the CIS
24 machines would have its display number set to 24. I
know that "display number corresponds to the port
number that WINVNC is listening on + 5900 for the WIN
Server and + 5800 for the Java server ex: Machine
CIS24 with display number 24 would have its WINVNC
listening on ports 5924 and 5824

The problem is this. When I log onto a machine with my
username and password WinVNC picks up the port number
of the last machine I used. But when the students log
on it picks up the correct port number. So if I loged
onto machine CIS15 at the keyboard of that machine
with my admin username and password then shut it down.
Then go to machine CIS22 The WINVNC server on CIS22
gets display number 15. So I cannot connect to it
correctly from my desktop workstation. BUT if student
logs onto CIS22 with HIS username and password then
WINVNC listens on the correct port of 5922????

Sorry if I typed too much in this post I wanted to
make the problem as clear as I could.
