Hi List!

Im trying to figure out WHY the VNC-server app seems to want to open a
connection on my tcp port 65516 when i first startup the server?

Would gladly recieve any leads to this.

How safe is it to do a thing like this from a computer ANYBODY can have

Thanks Corni.

Great, now I have my *.VNC file

Now, I would need the password encryption procedure to insert
automatically this information in the *.VNC file.

It's accessible this information ?
Where I can found information about this ?

 Saludos...

I have the current TightVNC (from http://www.tightvnc.com) running but I
recal it also works for the basic vncviewer on M$windows platforms.
Generate your own *.vnc files:

Start the vncviewer session you like to save. At the window bar (or task
button), right-mouse-click and from that menu, select "Save Connection
Info As..."

This gives the file for you session, you can use it over and over.

Sounds like your IP address changed on ya, or you pissed
off your ISP by running an incoming service and they turned
off your port.

I have a netscape session open on my VNC desktop and close the netscape
session leaving the VNC desktop only. If I then close the VNC desktop and
then bring it back up, I only have a VNC desktop. Is there any way to get
the netscape session to open again if it gets closed without restarting the
vncserver?

The tightvncviewer asked me to include the password or not. The
tightvncviewer can work with any other vncserver so you can savely upgrade
the viewer side only.

The unix source distro comes with a command `vncpasswd`. Get yourself the
source and you have the most complete spec. (I guess they use the same
algoritm, I don't see why they should differ)

Your IP address may have changes, as when you have a cable modem you are
usually using a dynamic IP address. You should verify your IP address and
try again.

Can anyone please give me a not-too-technical suggestion, as I'm not up on
networks, etc.?

Here's the deal: I installed VNC on my computer, which runs Windows 98 and
has a cable internet connection. I then went to a friend's house, and we
installed it on his computer, which also has Windows 98 and a cable internet
connection. I was able to access my computer several times and it worked
beautifully each time, opened programs, etc.

Then, the next time I tried to access it, I got the "Failed to connect to
server" message, and have gotten it every time since. The only thing I
changed was that I went to full-screen the last time it connected
successfully.

We went to a third location with another Windows 98 computer with a DSL
connection, installed the software, and couldn't access either of the two
computers, getting the same "failed to connect to server" message each time.
I finally went home and tried to access the other two from my computer and
got the same message.

What puzzles me is that it worked so perfectly several times, and then not
at all. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but nothing changed. Is there
anything else I can do, or should I just give up?

Ah, I see now. VNC is designed to remember the state you were in so
nothing "resets" when you close the viewer (which it seems that you
expect). I can think of three ways to answer you:

1) Restart Netscape from your WindowManager.
        a) Not going to work if for some reason you don't run a WM in
your VNC session.

2) Use VNC in inetd so that it does end the session when you close the
viewer and restart a new session when you reconnect.
        a) Not going to work if you like the ability to close the
session and be able to come back to it later in the same place.
        b) After looking around at the docs I'm not sure this is an
option without running XDM to login users. Maybe someone with more
experience can shed some light on it.

3) Use a script to start Netscape instead of running it directly.
        a) Completely untested, but I would guess that if you made a
script with a while(1) loop around the Netscape command it would execute
Netscape again if it closes.

I hope that gives you some ideas to work off of.

RealVNC is pleased to announce the release of version 3.3.4 of VNC for both
Windows and Unix platforms.

Binaries and source can be downloaded from the RealVNC website at
http://www.realvnc.com

This release is completely compatible with previous versions. There are
many bug fixes and several significant new features, including:

  * vastly improved low-bandwidth performance
  * automatic protocol selection based on line speed
  * efficient multi-viewer ("classroom") support on the Windows server

Enjoy!

I had read the archive, but had not found any solutions that worked or that

Right, that's all that you changed. But...your ISP may have
changed what your "real world" IP address is. Try this: startup a
browser on your Win98 PC (the one running VNC), and point it to:

        http://www.gotomyvnc.com

I wrote a little script there which will tell you what your real
world address is. If you want, it will then then "test" the connection
to that IP address to see if a VNC server is active and listening.

If the GoToMyVNC script tells you it connected to that IP
address successfully, you'll be able to point a VNC Viewer to that
same IP address and get it to work.

        Good luck!

-Scott

        Heya. Some quick thoughts:

> Yes, I can connect to the Vnc host machine through another computer
> thats on the router. But when I try to connect to the Vnc host machine
> thats on the router through a machine thats outside the router it
> doesn't work.

As William suggested, this is actually a feature of your
firewall/router, not a bug. :) The thing to keep in mind...is that
your firewall/router is doing "address translation" for you, on
the fly. So the IP address your PC has *inside* your network is
not the same IP address your PC appears to have *outside* the
network. This is called Network Address Translation (or NAT). If
you combine it with Port Address Translation (aka, PAT or IP
Masquerading), you can have a whole bunch of PC's on a LAN share a
single IP address given to your router by your ISP. Which, as you
can imagine, most ISP's hate.

Anyhow. Try this: fire up a browser on the VNC server that's
behind the firewall/router. Point it to "www.GoToMyVNC.com". This
page will show you what your PC's IP address appears to be out in
the Real World. Then go to your WinXP machine, and point the VNC
Viewer to this IP address. If you got your firewall/router setup
correctly, it will connect.

        Good luck!

-Scott

PS: Anyone notice that RealVNC 3.3.4 is available now? Woo. :)

I'm giving the installation of VNC 3.3.4 on a Windows 2000 Terminal Server a
rating of 9.9 (because there is never a 10).

This works great for Win2K console access. The only thing you need to do is
check the "register as a service" and "start the service" settings during
install, and it is immediately available. Simplest setup for Win2K I've
done
yet...

Here's the process I followed.

================
Test Platform

Windows 2000 SP3 TS in licensed Application Mode. (System was actually a
VMware
machine)

================
Install Process

(1) Manually did a "change user /install" since I prefer controlling the
entire
process (and this ensures that it stays in install mode until I say stop).

(2) Did the default install with the following 2 modifications on the
"Select
Additional Tasks" screen:
+ checked "Register as a service"
+ checked "start the service"

(3) After setup completed, the service window launched and I set the
password.

(4) switched to execute mode with "change user /execute".

=================
Post-Install Testing

I was immediately able to connect successfully to the console session with
no
one logged on and with one other user logged on remotely. Logging on to the
console directly first and then opening VNC and connecting worked fine as
well.

I powered the machine down completely, then restarted. VNC access was
available
moments after the Ctl-Alt-Del screen popped up on the VMware virtual
console.
Again, no issues with logging on.

Great! And much better on low bandwidth applications.

Now for a question.... Are there any plans to include a .spec file or
distribute an RPM version in the future? I'm sure I can hack around with
TightVNC's Spec to make it work, but I'd rather not duplicate work.

It works quite well actually. The point of my comment wasn't to expose my
stupidity, or yours, but to simply make the point that there's more than
just
"windows" servers being used... In real production too. :')

Ah...

I thought you passing them a bonk on the head for saying "Unix" and not
"Linux".

If the list receives this twice then I apologize (I have to be more careful)

Using three machines ( the viewer, proxy, and server) how do i tunnel vnc
through port 80. I have the server running on a non-firewalled computer,
and
the viewr is behind a firewall and router. The firewall blocks every port
but
port 80. I need the proxy to translate from port 5900 to port 80. All help
is appreciated!

Here's my two cents...

Delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default\Password. Stop
and start the WinVNC service and you will be prompted to key-in the
password. Type-in the password and go into the registry and open up the
password key. You will see something like 275EA8D255B012F2 (hex for abc123).
Create a .reg file with these lines

        [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default]
        "Password"=hex:27,5e,a8,d2,55,b0,12,f2

Then maybe create a batch file to run this silently for all the users (call
this batch file from the users' logon script).

Hope this helps,

Salvador

Thank you Salvador it worked. I tried that earlier today but I just realised
that I was connected to one of the client registry rather than the server
registry.

We actually use the Fastpush method to install the clients as Services and
is has a line in the machine.ini file
    Password = REG_BINARY 0x00000008 0xa86f166e 0x0cfe6e8d.
Once the push is completed it then installs vnc as a service.

Now how do I convert the Hex to the binary code for the fastpush?

How did you work out the ABC123 = 275EA8D255B012F2 in Hex?

Brent

What's so special about linux? For my experience, it's just an other unix
implementation. Hence, look in the unix area.

There is only 1 reason why linux is not unix and that's because it is not
quallified as such somewhere and so it cannot call itself unix since someone
registred that name to cash some money from software that calles itself
unix.

On the other hand, linux is frequently used in general unix cources...

Hello,
I have noticed that there is a new encoding called ZRLE (id 16).
What is the algorithm of this encoding? Could you give some benchmarks
comparisons with others encodings?

Thank you
