Part of problem lies with your IP settings. Use these:

iMac:
ip: 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
<leave others blank>

G4:
ip: 192.168.0.3
subnet 255.255.255.0
<leave others blank>

Now make sure you have a proper newtork connection between the two machines.
If you are using wired networking, and have a hub, you will need two
standard ethernet cables. Plug one into the iMac, one into the G4. Then plug
both wires into the hub. If you don't have a hub, you will need a crossover
cable. Plug the single cable into both machines.

If you are using Airport, just select it as your interface, and create a
peer-to-peer network.

I obviously have to take a lot for granted here.
