It funny how this mail hasn't got a hell of a lot to do with vnc, should be NT
Admin 101.

Although this mail wasn't my Question, I just wanted to extent my thanks to any
on this list who goes to the efforts like 'wilkinsd ' just did.

It nice to know how many people out there are willing to help.

J

Subject: Re: Remote installation of VNC

Funnily enough I've been doing this today and last week, on about 250
computers.

I have a similar school network to you. I used RealVNC, although it shouldn't
differ too much if you use a different version of VNC. This is how I did it:

All users have the same logon script, which I've called LOGON.BAT and sits in
the NETLOGON share on the server. This just maps drives (using net use) and
does some other stuff I've written which is irrelevant to this. You assign
users a logon script through NT User Manager for Domains (in Admin tools).

Now, this is what my LOGON.BAT looks like:

REM Start of Logon script
net use P: \\SERVER2\public

if exist "C:\Program Files\RealVNC\WinVNC\winvnc.exe" goto end

if not exist "C:\Program Files\RealVNC" md "C:\Program Files\RealVNC"
if not exist "C:\Program Files\RealVNC\WinVNC" md "C:\Program
Files\RealVNC\WinVNC"
Copy P:\RealVNC\WinVNC "C:\Program Files\RealVNC\WinVNC"

START /WAIT REGEDIT /S P:\orl.reg

"C:\Program Files\RealVNC\WinVNC\winvnc.exe" -install

goto end

:end
REM End of Logon script

Now I'll explain what each part does. First off, I have a share called PUBLIC
which is on the domain controller named SERVER2. In that share, are the files
that get copied to your hard-drive when you do a full installation of RealVNC
(ie the stuff that goes into C:\Program Files\RealVNC assuming you let it
install to the default path), except I deleted vncviewer.exe (so they couldn't
use the viewer program) and unins000.dat and unins000.exe so they couldn't
uninstall it. Now, the net use part of the script maps the users P: drive to
the PUBLIC share on SERVER2.

The 'if exist' part checks to see if the RealVNC files are on the local
computer, and if so, skips to the end (because VNC has already been
installed). If not, it makes the directories on the C: under Program Files,
and copies the files from the server. Next, it imports a registry key silently
(ie. without the confirmation message). I got this registry key from a client
machine that I had already set up as a server, with passwords set, and which
was also set up so that clients couldn't exit the program or mess with the
properties by right-clicking on the tray icon. To do this, goto Start > Run
and type Regedit. Goto the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORL] branch, make sure
ORL is highlighted and goto Registry > Export Registry File. I saved mine as
orl.reg and put it in the Public share on SERVER2.

To stop users from accessing the tray icons right-click menu add these to the
registry:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default]
"AllowShutdown"=dword:00000000
"AllowProperties"=dword:0
"AllowEditClients"=dword:0

You can copy the above 6 lines to a text file and save it as restrict.reg then
double-click it on the test computer before exporting orl.reg so that you get
all the correct settings.

The last part registers winvnc as a service, so that it'll automatically start
up each time the computer is switched on.

I assigned this logon script to a single test user, and went around the school
logging in as this user, then logging back off, and everything worked fine.
You could assign it to everyone so that throughout the course of the day, as
people log on, VNC gets installed, although they will get a message come up as
the service is installed saying something like "The WinVNC service has been
installed and will run now and whenever the computer is reset". They can click
OK or wait about 10 seconds for it to disappear.

I hope I've explained this clearly, but if you're unsure of anything email me
back and I'll try and help.
