You've created xstartup in a directory called .vnc (note
the leading dot) in your home directory, right? Have you
checked that it's executable? (chmod 700 xstartup)

Do you have kde installed? Type 'whereis startkde' just
to make sure - you should get something like:
 startkde: /usr/bin/startkde
as an output.
