Gary,
Have you tried pressing the "Alt" key when you've experienced the
freezes? Sometimes the Alt key can get "stuck" on the server machine
and cause odd windowing behaviour.
Are you sure that the problem programs aren't simply crashing, and
therefore not responding?
Finally, are you sure your system is virus-free? Some sort of virus
sounds to me to be the most likely cause, given the symptoms and
consistency across so many machines.
