Why is it there in the first place? The major reason is to indicate the sender of the message (read: the list engine) is not the originator (that address is in the from: header). > I use pine myself, but I think just about any mail client has a > 'reply to all' button.. which is what everyone I know has > been using since the > early 90's (And some of you have probably been using it into > the 80's). Yep. reply and reply-to-all are there for messages that are send to various addresses. The reason NOT to use that to send messages to one or more maillists is to avoid snowballing multiple messages to more and more addresses. > Reply-tos break things like vacation, and are a BAD idea.. Recent problems on a maillist show that vcation break maillists, not the other way round. Vacation messages should be send to addresses only once and keep a record for this purpose. It should not send to all addresses in the message every time. In this particular example, the origional message was included in the vacation message which is also a bad thing. Only headlines (read subjects) can be copied in the vacation message. > You wont lose an > 'archive messages'.. Most lists do NOT have a reply-to, i'm sorry to say.. for > those of you who think it does. None of the Security focus lists, linux > kernel lists, most LUG lists.. In fact, Out of the 80+ lists Im on, I count > 15 that have reply-to's.. That makes 15 discussion lists and 65+ announcement lists. I can imagine that, it's verry hard to follow discussions in 80+ maillists, not to imagine take place in such discussions. Most of the maillists I'm subscribed to have a decent use of reply-to: The discussion lists use reply-to:, the announcement lists have no reply-to: There is only one (out of 15) that violates this. It origion is an anouncement list and is moving some times into a discussion list. > It's not time for the mailing lists to change, it's time for > people to learn how it's done, and how it's always been done.
