I got my original problem fixed :) Thanks to all who sent in suggestions, but the problem was something I wouldnt ever have thought of.

A recap of my problem, incase the makers of RealVNC want to list and look into it: I installed RealVNC on my parents comp. They recently got an EMachines running Windows XP(Home edition) and Cable internet. What was happening was that it installed and loaded up fine. But when you restarted or shut down the comp it would not load up. But it would still appear in the tasks running on the comp so you couldnt open a new one until you Ctrl+alt+deleted and closed the unworking one. Then, if you opened manually, it would work.

So, what I did to try and combat this was disable winvnc in the Admin Tools>Services list, and put a shortcut to it in my Startup folder. The program would open, show itself on the taskbar, and otherwise appear to be running perfectly, but I could not connect with it from home. I played around with settings here and there but to no avail.

Finally, In a last desperate attempt, I set the Software Firewall I put on my parents comp(ZoneAlarm) to not load at startup. Lo-and-behold, it worked. So I have uninstalled it from my parents comp(Im doubtfull hackers will be too interested in it, and they still have good Anti-virus stuff). What stumps me though is, on my comps at home I have both zonealarm and realvnc running at startup on Win98 with no problems. For some reason WinXP, RealVNC, and ZoneAlarm dont mix. Although RealVNC ran fine manually with zonealarm on my parents comp still.

I hope that the makers of this program will look into this, because I would really like ZoneAlarm to work with RealVNC on thier comp. You can download a completly free version for testing(the same kind they use) from Zonelabs.com

And again, thanks to Victor and the other guys that gave me great suggestions :) They really helped narrow down the problem to an eventual solution.

I had a similar problem ...

Somehow, one of the "Timeout" registry entries for VNC had gotten a value other
than 0 ...

Once I reset them to 0 (which means no timeout), my connection stayed up ...

best of luck :-)

Hi,

I use Win2000. I connect over the internet to my home PC.

Problem:

I can connect to my PC, it asks me for the password ( if I enter the wrong
one, I got a failure message, so THERE IS A CONNECTION ) and if I enter the
right password and click on "ok", then NOTHING HAPPENS!!! THE VIEWERWINDOW
doesn`t open. No error message...

What can I do?

Subject: BUG: WinVNC shows no UI if there is no "current user" (Win98)
Date: Fri, 22 Nov 2002 11:34:58 +0000

There is a bug in WinVNC (Server) concerning the determination whether
the server is running as a service or as an application which pops up
under Win98.

If the Win98 network configuration does not contain a network client
and therefore does not contain any logon functionality (neither
a "Logon at client for MS networks" nor a "Logon at Windows") there
will be no current user logged on the system. My network configuration
consists of only two entries "Network Adapter XYZ" and the binding
of "TCP/IP to Network Adapter XYZ" and no network clients. Although the
Windows network applet complains about a missing network client, such a
configuration is a valid one and can be applied. It may be a little
unusual but it's the recommended network configuration of my ISP
(chello) and I like it very much because it's one of the simplest
network configurations I know.

For WinVNC (at least when running under Win98) this is a problem
because WinVNC uses the availability of a current user name to
determine whether it was started as a service or as an application. It
seems that WinVNC does not check explicitly whether it was started as a
service (when running under Win98) - it just queries for the current
user name and if there is none, it thinks that it was started as a
service.

The results of the above described system configuration are as follows:
- WinVNC does NOT show a tray icon
- WinVNC reads and stores its settings from the wrong registry keys

If /usr/contrib/X11R6 is a normal place to find X on HPUX, it merits
an autoconf bug report (to [EMAIL PROTECTED]). The VNC configure
is built with an old autoconf, but the current one won't look there
either.

configure should have inserted -Dsocklet_t=int into the Makefile if
the system doesn't use socklen_t. Does it not do so?

I contributed the relevant configure fragment, but I don't have HPUX
to test on. If you send me a transcript of running configure (_after_
removing any config.cache that's lying around) as well as the
resulting config.log, I may be able to spot the problem.

The problems you describe are not a bug in determining whether WinVNC is
running as an application or as a service, but in determinign whether or
not there is a user currently logged on. This is achieved by checking
whether the current user name is null - if there is a user logged in
then the tray icon and UI are displayed.

When running as an application, it obviously makes sense for the tray
icon always to be displayed, even if the current user cannot be
established. Expect a fix for that in the next release!

Cheers,

I would check to see if the service is running as I know if it is having a
problem it will stop the VNC service on the server. If it is running I would
try rebooting and after that reinstalling. I had initial problems that were
fixed by a reinstall and also noticed the service didn't start but after a
reboot it mysteriously works :)

Hope this helps

Have you tried running the "Service Helper" App? It should take care of
the tray icon.

What do you consider "the wrong registry keys"?

The main problem with running things as a service under Win98 is the
fact that it has very little concept of what a "service" is (as compared
to the WinNT family).

I don't know if you have had a reply to this yet. The only option you
have to make it work is to upgrade your OS to windows 2000 or XP, as
this feature doesn't work on NT.
It is in the Documentation at www.realvnc.com

Hello, I recently downloaded and installed VNC server on a windows NT

have a VNC viewer at home on a win XP home edition pc connected to the net

My problem is that i can't connect to the server at work from home. i
keep getting the failed connection error everytime. I've read a couple of
the listings and found nothing to help me out including the getting started
material on the realvnc website. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone
can help me out. Thank you.

Yes, the ESvnc branch has that function... I'm not sure about
the RealVnc, and The TightVNC branches though...

P.S. The Esvnc is a windows centric and it's enhancements are not
supported on other platforms...

More detail please. The WinNT machine is at work? Does it have a modem and
run WinProxy or does another machine on the network? Can you ping the work
machine from the home machine? Can you ping the home machine from the work
machine? Are you using any firewall hardware or software? Can you telnet

If you are talking about the java viewer:
You need to calculate the port number by adding the display
number to 5800. So the url will be http://a.b.c.d:58XX/
Where a.b.c.d is your IP address (see below).

Each of your network adapters has an ip address assigned to it.
So if you have 1 adapter for your lan (10.x.x.x or something)
this will be the ip address you use for connecting with the other
computers in your lan, and if you have one ras adapter there will
be another ip address which you use when connecting via the
internet.
