I'm not familiar with the workaround you're describing.  The problem of
the initial update being black is a known one but it should have little
practical impact, because the following update should contain the full
display content.

If you don't see the remote cursor moving around the window (under the
little dot cursor), then this suggests something more substantially
wrong with the connection between client and server.
