William,

I used that harsh tone writing to Andy Harter because I think he replied
to my Emails with little regard to my questions.

I am a developer too, and I don't want to insult Andy. If he feels
insulted, I ask Andy to excuse me. I hope this clarify the thread.

I am only looking for collaboration.
I asked Andy to give me details on the bug #19 and about the suggested
workaround:

real solution, right?).

You can see Andy's reply:

>From: Andy Harter [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]
>Sent: venerdl 13 dicembre 2002 15.41
>To: MECMATICA - Massimo Sala

>does your application work with VNC or not?

I feel unsatisfied with this reply (he didn't give me the requested info -
and I am not asking for an immediate solution), so I post my questions to
the list, with some personal feelings.

I don't pretend Andy solves this bug, but I think that I can "probe"
RealVNC level of service when they publish on RealVNC site
http://www.realvnc.com/support.html
>We offer both annual and per-incident support packages tailored to your
individual needs. Our services include one-business-day turnaround for
initial response to support incidents, rapid bug fixes and early access to
new releases.
I will decide on Andy / RealVNC team answers about to subscribe their
support services.

We developers can debug the applications, not end-users.
As I said, I want to use RealVNC (or other software, like PcAnywhere,
TightVNC, UltraVNC, ...) to support my customers.

And also to you, William, I say this about VNC:
> And what about the end-users?
> When an application doesn't work, do users have always to check if the
> application fails because its bugs, Windows bugs, VNC side-effects or
> other software interfering with ?

Do you think, for example, that my application can work fine with RealVNC,
but I cannot trust all the applications installed by users?
I cannot say to my customers: on your computer you can only have Windows,
VNC and our software.

This is what I mean when I am talking about "personal use / own risk"
versus "commercial grade applications" claiming "one-business-day
turnaround...".

By the way, yes, our applications run fine with RealVNC and TightVNC.

Best regards, Massimo Sala

I am constantly amazed by mails trying to get something fixed that go out
of
their way to try to insult the developers. First, you don't answer the
question asked (Does your app work?), then you proceed on a rant about how
VNC will never make it with this bug. News flash, VNC has been working for
a large number of people for years. No one is holding a gun to your head
saying you have to use VNC, go pay for PCAnywhere or something if you don't
like it.

Checking for the problem sounds easy.... Does it work when a VNC session
isn't connected? Does it stop when VNC is connected? If both answers are
yes then use the work around. Done.

That said, the status of the bug is "Under consideration" which if I
understand it correctly means the developers are trying to gather info as
to
why this happens so they can fix it. Either provide repeatable examples or
experience, or use the work around and quit complaining.

Maybe my message is a little harsh, but I think it follows the tone you
have
set with your e-mail. You are getting free software (Free as in speech and
free as in beer). Insulting people that are working to provide it does no
one any good.
</rant mode>

BTW - Don't start flaming VNC for my opinions, because I am in no way
connected, other than a satisfied user. Keep up the good work, guys.
