Subject: VNC 3.3.6 Crash on Solaris 8
Date: Thu, 19 Dec 2002 14:47:08 -0500

Hi All,
Althogh VNC 3.3.6 is much steadable than 3.3.3, it still
crashs sometimes on Solaris 8. When Adobe frame maker or
netscape is running inside a vncviewer, sometimes it will
cause the whole VNC system crash (including the server
and client). I have created a core dump from the VNC
server but I dont know how to debug it. Did anyone
meet this problem?
 Thanks.

John,

See my post on Dec. 20. I have crashes
every few minutes when I run with Zone
Alarm. This is after upgrading to Win2K,
which the viewer is running on. The server
is running on solaris 8. Both are from
TightVNC1.2.7. The server runs protocol
version 3.3, while the viewer runs protocol
version 3.5.

It is especially prevalent when I use
netscape 7.

The viewer is self installed (with WinVNC).
The solaris package was compiled with
gnu make version 3.75 and gcc version 2.95.2.
I saved all output from configure and make
steps, then did case-insensitive grep for the
words "error" or "warning"; nothing came up.

In my case, I believe I'm dealing with 2 different
problems. ZA causes dropped connections
while the VNC server itself is unstable in
other situations on top of that e.g. even
connecting to localhost with no ssh or firewall.

The first problem (access from ms-windows)
might be exacerbated by the Win2K services
that require server rights, as well as rights to
receive stuff from the internet (yes, it's very
vague). I grant all these rights, but the fact
that the problem persists until I shut down ZA
is perplexing. I describe this in the posting:

  ZoneAlarm & Win2K's Internet services

in comp.windows.misc (among others). Beware,
there is an obnoxious troller who spouts a bit of
self-righteous belligerence in my thread, and I
made the mistake of actually responding before
trying to cancel my hotheaded replies. As an
outside observer, you might find it entertaining if
you even have the time for kind of thing.
