Hi,

I'm running into all sorts of crashing
vncservers when using tightvnc1.2.7
running on solaris 8. Mostly associated
with netscape 7. It seems to be linked to
complicated graphics, with graded color
and/or moving graphics on a webpage.
In fact, when I changed to the "modern"
browser look, the vnc server kept crashing
whenever netscape started. I couldn't
even start it up to switch off the "modern"
look.

Anway, long story. I'd like to see if
RealVNC is more robust against these
things. Also heard that it has some good
compression going for slow lines, in case
it's ever needed e.g. if you visiting
another city and only have dialup access.

Problem is, other people use my build of
TightVNC, and I don't want to yank it away
without first exploring RealVNC. Is there
a way to do this? My concern is name
collisions between executables and scripts.
I can probably muddle around with my path
to avoid this, assuming that I have the
freedom to install it wherever I want.

This leads to the next question.

Second problem is that I'm not root. Can
I build it as nonroot? I see that there
are prebuilt RealVNCs for Solaris2.5, but
I'm using Solaris 8 (is this equal to 2.8?)
on a real sun box, not an i86. Do the
prebuilt RealVNCs presume that the installer
is root? If so, then I may have to go through
the process of building from source;
hopefully, the make scripts are gnu-like in
that they accept the --prefix option for
nonroot installers.

Thanks for the advanced look.

Fred
