Have you looked at the VNC log file to see if it has any errors?  Does VNC
work on display :2 if you start it manually?  Have you changed any of the
firewall configuration lately?

Odd that the server and viewer would give the same message (I assume since
you say "error box" that the client is a Windows machine).  Do you have any
firewall software installed?  Does the VNC log give more info around the
error?
