It sounds like you are confusing VNC with a Microsoft Windows based X
server.  You should just run "vncserver" on the unix machine (and set a
password if it is the first time) then connect with the viewer.  VNC doesn't
use the DISPLAY variable.

It would probably help if you give us more detail about how things are set
up... What version of unix are you using?  Are there any firewalls in the
way?  Are you trying to tunnel VNC over SSH?  Exactly what commands did you
try (there are a lot in the FAQ)?
