Thanks very much to all who answered by query, but I fear we have not got to the heart of the problem. The DOS window certainly does not go full screen. I can see it perfectly well and all is normal until I type the name of the .exe -as soon as I hit enter, I start getting the cursor marks all over the screen (but I can still send ctrl-alt-del to terminate the window, albeit sluggishly). If somebody at the remote end types in the name of the .exe then all goes fine and I can see the whole process -no whole-screen at any time (it would be nice for me if whole screen worked, but that is a separate question).
In the server preferences I have "poll foreground window", and "poll console windows only" checked (but not at all sure what the latter means). Any more ideas?
