Got it working, here's the information for others who might be up against the same problem:
The documentation for the RealVNC Server suggests that you can leave server's display number pretty much set to "auto," that "There is normally no need to change this from the default of zero." Problem is, even with port 5900 forwarded, the outside world could not find the VNC server. This is with a WinXP box, static local IP, etc. I was able to verify this thanks to Rachel who pointed me to the http://www.gotomyvnc.com/ testing website. It could not find any displays anywhere between 0 and 9. However, manually setting the server's display number to 0 let gotomyvnc find the server, at 5900. If I set the display to 2 and forwarded 5902, hey presto! gotomyvnc found it at display 2. Back to "auto" and with 5900 forwarded -- nothing. This is all probably because I misunderstood something, but I hope others with a similar problem will find my experience useful. Thanks to all!
