Thanks for your help, Scott C. Best sent me an answer which could also
help out. It actually would explain why I cannot ping the machine of my
dad. There seem to be a firewall in WinXP also. His answer is below, he
put also a link to a very useful and informative FAQ. Unfortunately, I
have to wait a couple of days to check if these things work, because my
father had to bring his box back to the store due to other problems...

I'm afriad i'm suffering from the exact problem as you, but I have already
disabled fast use switching. To disable fast user switching, one must go
start>settings>control panel>user accounts, then click "Change the Way
users log on or off" then un check the box that says "fast user switching"
and click "apply options". It is a pretty simple process and since it's
only a checkbox, there is very little room for error, possibly you could
walk your father through it over the phone.
If that fixes your problem, wonderful. If that does not fix your problem,
let me know how you do fix it, because i am having similar problems.
