I can see this issue has been discussed at a number of discussions here but I can't seem to find the answer. So I have the same problem, gray blank screen with only the terminal from my Linux Box where vncserver is running. I am using Windows XP as client. I see folks here commented out the line with 'twm ' and replaced that with gnome-wm or other similar commands like exec gnome-session & in the 'xstartup; script.
Also I saw this: if [ -f "$HOME/.Xresources" ]; then xrdb "$HOME/.Xresources"; fi instead of xrdb $HOME/.Xresources Some one did this : unset SESSION_MANAGER exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc So, how do we fix this? Any one... help ??
