Hi,
Perhaps I present myself first shortly. I am the director of Luxembourg's most
known boarding school and in my non-administrative time also responsible for
the local educational robotics project. We are working with Lego Mindstorms on
different levels from easy to masters. Our web-site around the project is well
known all over the world. Personnaly I am in intensive contact for two years
now with Prof Chris Rogers from Tufts University, the author of the Lego robot
Labview-based programming-environment called ROBOLAB. (By the way this
programming tool won numerous prices as a great didactical tool.) I
participate at the development of the next version of ROBOLAB. Have a look at
our site and appreciate what we have done so far
http://www.convict.lu/Jeunes/RoboticsIntro.htm (Don't be afraid, "convict"
does not have the same meaning here in Luxembourg than in Anglo-saxon regions.
It roughly means "living together".)
Now I have been asked to participate at the event called SCIENCE FESTIVAL,
which will happen in november 2003. The event is organized by the Luxembourg
Museum of Natural History, the Luxembourg Institute for Technology, the Lux
Research Foundation ... The object of my contribution will be a "MARS-robot"
capable to be programmed over the internet. The robot called Rover-X will move
over a Mars-like environment and people from outside should have the possible
to program its behaviour in the environment, responding to the actual problems
that are caused by the course of the events.
Rover-X will be programmed through ROBOLAB. The idea now is to control
ROBOLAB/LABVIEW functions over the Internet via simple web-browser through a
Java-applet. After a request at National Instruments, the guys there
recommended to use your product, since the install on client side is extremely
simple.
Now my two questions:
a.. is it possible to limit the remote client-access to one application (in
our case ROBOLAB/LABVIEW), so that people won't be able to have full control
over the server computer? How would that be possible? Does there exist some
source-code (or better raedy for use program-parts) that would allow this?
b.. since we are working at multi-user level. How could we add the feature
to
a.. deny active control for any other client than the actually authorized,
while all the other clients could look what is happening
b.. limit the authorized active control to any client (except
administrator-level) in time. Thus the program should show a watch -visible
for all, perhaps with the client-name- All the others should be in a queue and
receive control after the time-out of the predecessors?
c.. My problem is, that I am no JAVA-specialist. I am able to read and
understand those programs, but writing causes me some headaches. Did you ever
worked with Labview?
I must say, that I was AMAZED, when I saw your product first. This is simply
great. !!! Congratulations.
Best regards,
Claude Baumann
