: the place I most need to be able my computer from is uni, where I am
: behind a proxy. I have come to the conclusion that I cannot access
: the server from behind a proxy. Basically I want to know if there is
: any way around this. Using a different port for VNC or perhaps using
: VNC through SSH?
Depends on the details of what is meant by "behind a proxy".
But there are three widely used methods (and a host of less
often used methods) for traversing firewalls and working
through proxies.
1. use ssh to traverse the firewall, then redirect an appropriate
port to get to the vnc server; this is made reasonably simple
in tightvnc by the -via option; vncviewer -via gateway remotehost
2. use socks proxy; perhaps simplest is by downloading runsocks
or dante socksify (for linux) or SocksCap or other (for windows)
and then simply (eg) runsocks vncviewer remotehost
3. use reverse connection; that is, have the server connect to
the viewer; read VNC docs for details, but in general, you
start the vncviewer in "listen mode" vncviewer -listen
then arrange for the server to contact it vncconnect
