Hi, maybe you're using the wrong encoding? If you request the raw encoding with a resolution of 1024x768x4 you'll transfer sth about 3MB of data per refresh. On a 10MBit network you can transfer about 1MB per second, though it will take 3 secs per update (if the whole screen changes).
Just an idea because vnc will (normally) use the appropriate encoding on its own. Have a look at the command line options about the encodings and use Hextile or RRE for example.
