You mentioned you've seen this on 4.0 beta... But we've had the same
thing happen when using 3.3.3, the latest TightVNC, and 4.0b.

NTPD is currently off in all run levels.  I'll check up a bit on the
idle timeout possibility...

Idle timeout?  See the VNC server logs to see the reason the viewer was
disconnected.

I have seen this symptom with 4.0beta.  Are you running NTP on the
server?  Does the problem still persist if you turn off the NTP daemon?
