[snip] <So it seems that RealVNC > Run VNC Server is just a sort of "superficial" server", as mentioned in the FAQ Q31. Maybe in next version, you could add some code to <start the real service in NT systems when people run "Run VNC Server". < < Next issue: From time to time we would get posts asking how to hide the system-tray icon. The suggestion is <http://www.realvnc.com/faq.html#hide <ie to recompile. Quite difficult and tedious, no? < < From the above experience, by chance I discovered that manually start VNC service won't show the system-tray icon (well, forgive my ignorance if you know this <already :) ). With some Windows Script, I'm pretty sure it's possible to do some trick to hide this icon. Actually, since this icon appears only when someone's logged <on, we can _restart_ the VNC Server service as soon as he logs on. At least, I've tried this manually and it works! < < So, is there any plan to separate the console (system-tray icon) from the service in future version? < < Seak
In answer to your first question, VNC 4 beta already has the option to start and stop the VNC service, you can download it here: http://www.realvnc.com/4.0b4-download.html When VNC is running on a Win2K/NT/XP machine, what actually starts up the VNC icon on the computer system is a call in the Windows registry here: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run with a data value of "C:\Program Files\ORL\VNC\WinVNC.exe" -servicehelper Deleting this value will allow VNC to be run as a service without the icon appearing in the above mentioned operating systems. It sort of works in Win9x systems, but not as well. In response to recompiling without the icon, you can find that version here: http://membres.lycos.fr/tgx874sah/download.php?id=1 Also, the Run VNC Server option is supposed to be a one time use type of call for VNC. This is helpful for remotes who don't want VNC permanently installed on their system.
