Sorry if this is the wrong list to ask this question; I know the following can be done in VNC,
but I want to get it working in Exceed, which seems to give faster graphics response than VNC...
Scenario: I start an Exceed client in XDCMP-Query mode and set host to my remote AIX box. I start an X server on an AIX box (/usr/bin/dt/Xsession) and the X session pops up on my Exceed client (on Win2k). All OK. But now if I close the Exceed client, the Xsession on the AIX box dies too.
Question: is there any way to keep the Xsession running on the AIX box, so I can reconnect to it with Exceed later and continue working where I left off.
No, because the Xserver that is running the Xsession and controlling everything about it is on your PC. VNC runs both the Xserver and Xclients (all the stuff that makes up your xsession) on the server and you connect as if you just had a really long monitor cord.
If your AIX box it slow, or if you are using 24 bit color, VNC can seem slower, although if you bring up graphics intensive applications VNC will feel faster.
There is some tuning that you can do for VNC, particularly in how big and how deep (color depth, 8bit, 24 bit, etc) the display is, but between the client and server ther are compression settings.
I also recommend using TightVNC, in my experience between UNIX and PCs it seems (to me) to be the fastest.
