tips for speeding up vnc

i just started using vnc from windows 2003 viewer to a linux vnc server.  It 
seems quite slow.   It's just a local connection at home so I was thinking 
performance would be better since there's no traffic.  Any help would be 
appreciated.  Also, I'm running this on redhat 9.  How can I make vnc 
startup automatically.  I wanna run this server headless.  I'm  a linux 
newbie so any really specific ideas would be great.  thanks!!
