hello,

the vnc 4 beta 4 makes a very good experience over a 128kbit dsl line.
it auto adjusts to 64 colours, info diagnoses a 100k bandwidth.

though, it uses that much cpu power on the server. the difference
between a 500mhz pentium and a 2.4ghz pentium is significant; on the
lesser machine vnc eats away from the applications, and destroys some of
the benefit of having good transport efficiency.

is this due to the build not compiled with full optimazition - being a
beta, or to the algorithms used? is this to improve?

regards.

peter

PS: I did ask about experiences with printing from remote to local: I
settled now with lpd on the software router at client side.

its easy on the users, and works just great, but is even more insecure
than vnc: the same access list, and no password at all!

as an option, some jetdirect printservers support ipp - but it
has no additional security features built in.
