I've got a 614 also and have had no problems setting it up to use VNC, in a
number of different ways.

The 614 does NOT forward any ports for you by default. You have to go into
the config webpage and find the page for port forwarding.

For example, I can forward ports 5900 thru 5999 to the machine on my net
behind the 614 that is running the vnc server. If my server is running on
192.168.5.5, then I tell the router to fwd 5900-5999 to 192.168.5.5. If I
have the server listening on port 90, I can contact the server from the
outside world with vnc viewer using my WAN IP:90 (1.2.3.4:90). This is
perhaps the easiest way to set things up. Of course, you probably shouldn't
forward all the ports. It would be better to pick one, like 0, and forward
5900-5900 to the machine running the vnc server. If you pick a port less
than 10, you can use http://www.gotomyvnc.com/ to check things out. Make
sure you configure your vnc server to set the connection to the port you
pick - 0 is the default.

There's a slight chance that an ISP might block these ports. I'm not sure,
but there was a period of time when this config wasn't working for me and I
suspected the port blocking. It is something to consider, if you can't get
this to work.

If you suspect port blocking or want more security, try using ssh. There
are web pages that describe how to make vnc secure with ssh, but in a
nutshell:

I DON'T fwd any of the ports from 5800-5999 on my 614. Instead, I forward
port 22, the SSH port, to some machine on my network; it doesn't really
matter which one, as long as there is an sshd running on it. On my Windows
machine in the outside world, I run putty. I set up putty to forward port
5990 to the machine running the vnc server. In the putty menu, this looks
like "L5990 192.168.5.5:5590". I then establish an ssh connection and when
I run the vnc viewer, I select localhost:90 to connect to the vnc server.

But the bottom line is that the 614 works great.

Hope this helps,
Karl
