It sounds like you are using a windows (ctrl-alt-del) The issue is to get to your own task bar. Pressing the windows button or ctrl-alt-esc, brings your machine's task bar to foreground. Then right click the VNC task and turn off full screen. The ctrl-alt-esc "trick" is also handy to give you more desktop space, you can turn off the option in toolbar to be "Always on Top". Then press the windows button or ctrl-alt-esc and it is back.
