Can't connect unless part of home-network

VNC works great as long as computers all share the same router (i.e. all my
home computers or all my office computers). However, when I try to contact a
computer that does not share the same router, after a minute delay, VNC says
it can't connect.
Any one know what is causing this or how to solve this?
