Thanks for everyone's help on this, but it looks like we were all chasing the wrong 
tree for awhile.  I was able to resolve the situation by doing the following:

In the VNC Viewer options, I changed the Encoding Type to "Raw" instead of "ZRLE".  I 
was then able to connect just fine to both BOX_2 and BOX_1.  Changing it to "Hextile" 
didn't work; I still got the same drop immediately after connection.

Now the additional question:  Why would this matter?  What happens differently with 
Raw encoding as opposed to ZRLE?  I would think that raw encoding would send MORE data 
across the wire, making it more likely to spontaneously drop...?  Could the ZRLE 
encoding be incompatible with the SSH2 encryption for some reason?  (super unlikely)  
Is this possibly a well-concealed corner-case bug?
