Well, you have to try to use different server-client color depths.  Some 
combinations are optimal, some aren't.

        In order to increase reponsiveness, you have also to consider reduce screen 
effects on server side: eg disable "display content while dragging window", no 
wallpaper (but this is normally disabled by the server), no transparent effect, etc, 
etc
