It seems only RealVNC and TightVNC have unix versions and neither of them
include scaling in the unix version of the viewer. Is this accurate or am I
missing something?
The KRDC client (KDE menu option "desktop connections") does scaling. I've noticed that it and realvnc4b4 seem to fight often (i.e. one or the other kills the other). I've used it no problem for connecting to the debian real vnc 3.x servers. It's quite nice.
