Hi James, Back when the ZlibHex work was done, we certainly disclosed the protocol number used to the VNC development team at AT&T Laboratories Cambridge. Compatibility across all implementations has been our goal from the beginning.
The protocol number in use by ZlibHex is documented here: http://www.uk.research.att.com/archive/vnc/protocol.html Please pardon my ignorance. I was unaware that there was a list of "registered extensions". I am currently unable to locate any documentation about registered extensions on the RealVNC web site. Any information you have about the list of registered extensions and how new encodings might be added (disclosed) to avoid conflicts in the future would be appreciated. If the RealVNC implementation has begun using the ZlibHex number ("8") for a different encoding mechanism, then I can see how this would cause a conflict and lead to "unknown subencoding" error messages. We hoped to avoid this type of problem by making our extensions known from the beginning.
