After re-reading your message (that I didn't read thoroughly :p), I understood
that your client shutdown didn't lead to machine crash, right?
But you didn't answer if there's any particular action you've done before the
client closes down, like changing screen resolution / refresh frequency / colour depth?
OTOH, as others might suggest you: try VNC4 :)
