Since you can connect to the WinXP machine (ie, you get
to the "authentication" part of the connection), you don't have
any network or firewall problems to worry about. That's the good
news.
The bad news is that WinXP and VNC don't play very nicely
with each other if you're not a little careful. Here's a list of
potential problems you may see:

You can skip the first part, as it's about WinXP's firewall,
and you're past that hurdle. One of the others is tripping you up...
