Another update, I (again) removed all traces of VNC, including all
registry entries, then ran a couple of different registry consistency
checkers, cleaned up what they reported, rebooted, ran the checkers
again, then installed vnc 4.  Same Problem.

I was also contacted off list by another person that is seeing this
behavior on more and more of their systems, and who hasn't been able to
get any help.

I think there's a real problem here that needs looking into.  So much,
in fact, that I've requested price quote for a support contract for my
home network, from realvnc.org.   We'll see what they come back with.
