Wez,

I made a posting about this error before I read your message so here is what
I see.

My Viewer is a WinME system; my server is a WinXP Pro. The WinME system
connects to the WinXP Pro system via a VPN over the Internet (just so you
know but I don't think it has any bearing on the error). The VNC Viewer on
WinME appears to connect okay and goes to the next screen which requests the
Username and Password. When I enter the password and click OK, I get the
error displayed on the screen in a standard Windows (VB like) error box. I
reported this error in my posting to this list on 7/19.

"I use both Microsoft Terminal >>Services and VNC to log into an XP system
remotely from a WinME system. Sometimes VNC fails to authenticate with an
error which says "VNC Viewer : Error/SelectObject to CompatibleDC failed.
The parameter is incorrect" - (connects okay to computer but error happens
during authentication).

I tried several scenarios and the one which fails is when I try to use VNC
after TS. If I log in locally to XP, it works okay with VNC after TS. If I
log in remotely using Microsoft Terminal Services and then try to log in
with VNC I get the error.

When you log in via MS TS, it takes control of the terminal; when you log
out of TS, it locks the terminal and you have to enter CTRL+ALT+DEL to log
in again.

If you have a local session (not via TS) and log out you have to enter
CTRL+ALT+DEL to log in again but you can log in fine via VNC.

My conclusion is that the logout in the TS case and the local log out are
slightly different and that is enough to throw VNC off.

Has anyone got a workaround for this problem?"

It also occurs when I run the VNC Viewer on an XP system (see my other post
on 7/19)

"I posted a problem earlier which described a problem I was having with a
VNC error when I tried to use VNC after MS Terminal Services. I just
tested it again with my home system which is XP Pro and I got the same
error."

Hope this answers both your questions

JP,

Where does the error get logged - in the Windows 2003 Server's event log, or
as a message box at the client, or both?

Which platform is the viewer running on?
