I've seen it work on wireless systems before, but it will vary. Note that
the manufacturer's response here:

translates into "the modem is too slow". It takes so long translating
received and transmitted data that you get problems. This is sometimes OK
with a large enough data pipe overall, but wireless dialup suffers from low
bandwidth on top of the retransmits and direct lag in normal wireless.

Depends on the underlying quality of the connection. Eventually, something
in the stack has to say "this is taking too long."
