Using vnc-4.0-x86_win32_viewer.exe on W2000, attempting connection to Red
Hat 8 out of the box newbie. This was installed on the W2000 machine by
unzipping vnc-4.0-x86_win32_viewer.zip
I received the password prompt and then a patterned gray screen, so I assume
I have acquired a connection to the Red Hat machine because the title bar
indicates
whomever's X desktop(localhost.localdomain:1)
The VNC Connection Info indicates the expected
Desktop Name
Host
Size
Pixel Format
Service default: matched Pixel format
Request encoding: hextile
Last used encoding: hextile
Line speed estimate: 20000 kbits/s
Protocol Version: 3.3
Security Method: VncAuth
So, why the patterned gray screen? The Red Hat machine is logged in Gnome.
Only oddity to my knowledge is that the User field in the password prompt
was grayed.
Similar results using vnc-3.3.7-x86_win32_viewer.exe

This is a home lan using a Linksys router. Using Cygwin I can at least
telnet to the Red Hat machine as another user, root or otherwise.
I had expected to see the current desktop of the Red Hat machine instead a
gray fullscreen with a thick black X for the cursor.
Something I did not read?
thanks
