Perhaps I was not clear in my first post.

It is possible to run the java vncviewer outside of a web browser.

Yes. You apparently need to have the VNC Viewer either in your Java class path or explicitly give the relative path to it; I have never been able to use the JAR, but have had to extract the actual class files.

I don't know about the listen mode, you would need to look through the class code, but here's a commandline that works for me with the Microsoft VM for connecting to a remote system when running from the folder containing the class files:

jview .\vncviewer.class host 192.168.1.20 port 5900

Note the explicit use of the port numeric. I believe I got started on this from the VNC docs, but I can't find the location online now - this is from something I did 2-3 years ago.

 I
was wondering where I should place the vncviewer.jar file for easy
access, as it does not exist in the normal \program files\realvnc
directory structure.

Also, is it possible to execute the java vncviewer (outside of a web
browser) and give it a parameter such as "-listen"?

Cheers,

Shaun

Subject: Re: Syntax for running java viewer standalone under Windows?

I don't think there is a difference between Sun and MS JAVA as far as
RealVNC goes. But I have only used it with the Sun Java client
downloaded from Sun's website, on Win2k sytems.
As for the "standalone" mode, I'm not sure what you mean. Perhaps you
are a referring to "User Mode" as opposed to "Service Mode". In
Service mode RealVNC loads as a service and thus is a available even
before the machine is logged onto by a user. In User mode, RealVNC
does not launch until a user clicks on the RealVNC application or a
shortcut is put in the Registry RUN section or Programs \ Start Up
section.

I haven't been able to find the answer to this one. Where should the
vncviewer.zip or .jar files be placed and what is the syntax for
invoking it? Is there a big difference if using MS Java instead of SUN
Java?

Also, is it possible to launch it in "listen mode"?

Cheers,

Shaun
