Not sure why you recalled this, Magdalena, it's good advice. Unless you're not connected in any way to the outside (you won't be getting this), you need some kind of protection. It's theoretically possible to restrict your box to brain-dead versions of browsers and such to attempt to avoid infection, but your users won't, and they'll use your box to propagate. You can use UNIX/Linux, and hope nobody ever takes an interest, but with the EU government's current interest in standardizing on it, don't bet on it.

Trust me, unless you write ALL your own stuff, you don't know what "features" the DLLs that run your apps come packaged with, and if you're not running Linux, the OS kernel either. Fortunately, major attacks are still relatively infrequent, but one will eventually happen that affects some OS element that's deep in the kernel, and users of well-connected, frequently-updated antivirus programs will be blissfully running their businesses, while folks like Valis will be trying to reconstruct their enterprises from the backup tapes he probably also doesn't use. Real programmers DO use anti-virus software.

That said, there are already a number of horror stories on the 'net about NAV 2005. I wouldn't assume it's "better" (well-behaved?) than 2004. Any software is a balance between the benefits derived, and the effort required to administrate it. These are starting to be a tough call.

For Judy Wilkerson, a NAV version is usually good for four years or so. If you've worked the bugs out of your current versions, just renew the def update subscriptions.

We're successfully running a Windows VNC through three different versions of NAV, including NAV 2004 and 2005. They do require some setup.

I know this is not a preach forum, but not running anti-virus of any form is
very short-sided. Viruses come in all forms today. You can get viruses from
websites (that automatically download things), instant messaging, and email.

You do not have to run Norton. There are many kinds of anti-virus programs out there.

norton and mcaffee both cause problems

i dont run any antivirus software normally. if you are fully aware of what
you are doing, then running it is virtually POINTLESS unless you WANT to
give yourself problems and slow down your computer. if you know what you
are doing, you can avoid the viruses that are out there (dduuuhhhh... i'll
open this attachment!!!), and the new viruses that come out you aren't
protected against ANYWAY until several hundred people GET it and the company
updates and you get the update.

whenever i have a suspicion, the two online virus scanners from trend micro
and symantec are run, which are inhertently the most up to date.

Has anyone have it yet? I know some of mine are going to expire and 2004 has been a pain.
