Wout, I wasn't aware that Pedro was using X on his Mac. The encoding type used will not affect how long X takes to render things, but will affect how much data is being passed through the system bus & via main memory, since raw pixel data is comparatively huge.
What may be Pedro's problem, and the reason that VNC Thing seems faster than other versions, is that ZRLE takes more CPU to encode - it's therefore the case that old, slow server platforms can actually be faster if the Viewer is forced to use Hextile encoding.
