Both machines need to be connected to the internet or somehow already be
reachable to each other. To ping, go to a dos prompt and type "ping
<hostname>" or "ping <ip.address.of.remote>" If you are not already
connected to the internet when you try to connect via VNC, that would cause
the "unable to connect" issue you report.

Subject: Novice needs help getting started

Hi, all!

I'm in need of some basic instructions as to how to
get started with Real VNC, please. I've downloaded
the software on my computer and the computer I want to
remotely access. And I attempted to set up the host
on one computer, and the viewer on the other.

I've read the getting started portion of the Real VNC
website, and printed off and read the Viewer and
Server documentation, but am still having difficulty.

So..... let me start with a very basic question - how
do I "ping" another computer? The Real VNC website
suggests this as this first step in troubleshooting.
I've pinged in the past, but can't remember the
command any more.....

Also, another basic question, when using Real VNC (and
other remote access software, such as pcAnywhere), am
I supposed to be connected to the internet when I try
to connect, or does it matter one way or the other?
And does the other computer have to be connected to
the internet?

I'm using Windows 98 and connect to the internet via
modem and phone line - not high speed - just regular
land line. The host computer that I'm trying to
access is using Windows XP and connects to the
internet via cable.

When I try to run VNC server, I get the VNC Viewer:
Connection Details dialog box. I've been typing in
the IP address for the host (is that what I'm supposed
to do?). Then I get the VNC Viewer: Connecting -
attempting to connect to host message, but ultimately
I get the message "unable to connect to host:
Connection timed out (10060)".

Thanks much for any pointers!

Mary
