Forgot to add, using vnc 3.7

Can you describe the process in a little more detail, specifically:
When logged in as a user, I can change the display to 1, open 5901 and point it to the machine, and it works. How do you change the display to 1? Open 5901?
Is this using version 4 of RealVNC?
