I want to use VNC so that the misses can connect to her business PC from the
home. This is the first time I have installed and tried to use it. The
documentation is pretty good - but sorely lacking some details for sure!

I'm sure you have heard this a hundred time, but heck, I cannot find any
simple explanations or help on how to troubleshoot this. An it seems all the
articles I do read say "make sure you can ping the server" - or, "hold your
mouse over the VNC tray icon" to figure out the IP address (nahhhhh). I think
I need some help or discussion on VNC, routers, firewalls, and stuff like
that. Also, I seem to find NOTHING on registering and deregistering - not even
on RealVNC home page. What is this all about?

I have VNC server running on a Windows XP home edition machine - across town.
The internet connection is through a DSL modem, provided by local telco. When
you hold the mouse over VNC icon, you get this: "VNC Sever (Service):
192.168.1.96". Well of course, I cannot ping this local private address from
my home (the other side of town). So, what IS the IP address I must enter into
my VNC viewer on the home machine?

So, I do not think there is anything on the market at present that uses static
IP addressing. Everything is set for obtain IP dynamically, and I believe
nearly all routers use NAT. So, how do you determine the IP addressing
information to plug into the viewer?

Any good articles or discussion on this? Any information on what you have to
do in your router, if anything? Her router is a Westell DSL Cable Modem.

Sure would like to get this working.
