You can't use 192.168.x.x IPs when connecting from outside your LAN. You
have to know the IP address of your DSL router. You also have to enable
port-forwarding and forward say, port 5900 to a particular machine on your
LAN. That is, port 5900 on your router needs to be sent to port 5900 on
192.168.0.4 or whatever your home machine is. This is very basic stuff here.

As I mentioned earlier, you need to know what the IP of your router is when
you're trying to connect to it from the internet. An easy way to do this is
to use a dynamic dns provider such as no-ip.com or dyndns.org or one of the
many other dynamic DNS providers. There will probably be a client you need
to run on your system at home to keep your DNS record updated so you can
know at any given time what the external IP of your machine is.

Subject: IP address Actiontec DSL

Hi. I've been having fun playing with VNC. Use it to control my desktop
from my notebook, behind a built-in firewall, so I can play music from my
bedroom. (I know this is a lame way to use such a robust product), but I am
trying to configure it for some work uses. At home and work we have
Actiontec DSL modems set up wireless. 128 Wep encryption. I changed the DSL
settings to allow remote management and remote telnet. It has settings for
port forwarding which I do not understand. Also, not sure if I am putting
in the right IP address in VNC Viewer. I have been trying something like
192.168.0.4,xxx.xxx.xx.xx and I have received this: "Unable to resolve host
by name: The requested name is valid and was found in the database, but it
does not have the correct associated data being resolved for. (11004)" Just
wondering if anyone sees any errors or suggestions. I have no problems in a
subnet environment. Using Win2000 machines. -Jeff
