By default vnc comes with its own X11-server (it IS an X11-server: Xvnc). Hence I think you indicate the vnc-module that can hook into XFree86 R4. That module is build on a XFree86 R4 version that was the base of X.org and the current xfree86. (who can fill out the detailed versions?)
Hence, if you cannot get the vnc-module to work with X.org, you most-likely cannot get it to work with the current xfree86 too...
I'm willing to 'downgrade' if they don't work with x.org, but would rather not if I can avoid it...
Just try to get it up and running. IF you have problems, scan the list for known problems or ask the list.
